Domenico Punturiero, known to everyone as Mimmo, took a stroll in Mission Bay when he first arrived in New Zealand to start a new life. He liked what he saw because it reminded him very much of his home town in Italy; a beautiful beach, sparkling sea, and a quaint village atmosphere, he liked it so much that he told himself that this was where he would start a business.
Hence, Mamma Mia Restaurant and Pizzeria was established and it was a great success right from the start. It was a fresh new approach to dining out. Aucklanders loved the striking flavours of Italian food, the personality, and charming casual ambience. The 1970’s didn’t offer super chefs, corporate coffee or takeaway giants, but Mission Bay had Mamma Mia, the first and best for over 35 years.
Mimmo introduced a generation of New Zealanders to wonderful Italian fare; grilled calamari, misto di mare (mixed seafood platters), and a delightful pasta and pizza menu that soon became legendary. In today’s competitive market, over 35 years in the restaurant business can be considered legendary too, but Mimmo’s commitment and dedication to his business and to the customers he has enjoyed serving for years has been unfailing.
